Quadruple Amputee in NYC Plans $100M Lawsuit against City
November 24, 2008
A mother of three says a Brooklyn hospital and ambulance workers didn't properly treat a potentially deadly bacterial infection that left her legally blind and a quadruple amputee.
Tabitha Mullings filed notice Thursday that she plans to sue the hospital and various city agencies for $100 million.
She says Brooklyn Hospital Center emergency room doctors told her in September that she had a kidney stone and sent her home. She called 911 twice in 24 hours, but Mullings says ambulance workers determined she did not need to be hospitalized.
The next day, she was in septic shock and returned to the hospital. Doctors were forced to amputate.
The city Law Department calls the situation "tragic'' and says it hasn't yet received the court papers. Brooklyn Hospital Center did not immediately return a telephone call.
